Neil Arnott (1788-1874) - Inventor of Air Mattresses


Neil Arnott FRS (May 15, 1788 - March 2, 1874) was a physician and inventor and philanthropist from Scotland.

Graduate of Marischal College, University of Aberdeen, AM degree (Magister Artium) obtained in 1805, while the MD degree in 1814. Arnott internship in London under the care of physician Sir Everard Home. When I was 19 years old, Arnott was appointed as a surgeon in the East Indiaman merchant fleet owned by the UK and the Netherlands.

After twice sailed to China as a physician British East India Company (1807-1809 and 1810-1811), Arnott settled in London from 1811 until 1854 to practice as a doctor. His expertise quickly made ??his name known as a doctor.

Arnott was invited to give lectures in Philomathic Institution. Lecture materials published as a book entitled Elements of physics (1827). He also became one of the founders of the University of London (1836). French and Spanish Embassy in London appointed as the official doctor for several years. 

After that, the Queen of England as the doctor gave him tremendous confidence for the kingdom. In 1838, Arnott selected as a member of the Royal Society, and the title of Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). As an interested for the advancement of science, Arnott gives cash grants to four universities in Scotland, each of 2,000 pounds sterling.
